Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art/self-defense system that focuses on utilizing submission techniques such as joint locks and chokeholds. The concept of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a smaller, weaker person can defend or attack a bigger opponent using technique, leverage and ground fighting.
The origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be found in the early 1900’s with the arrival of Mitsuyo Madea to Brazil. Madea would teach the eldest son of Gastao Gracie, Carlos Gracie for a few years before passing on the knowledge to his brothers. Helio Gracie would further develop the art to adapt his weaker frame to defeating much larger, stronger opponents.
It was made popular in the early 1990’s with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where Royce Gracie would defeat much larger, stronger opponents from other styles of fighting.
To this day, Brazilian jiu-jitsu has become a staple of self-defense, practiced among many countries worldwide.
